There are straight axles, drop axles and set back drop axles. Straight axles are low cost entry level axles that are installed on 85% of all motorcycle and cargo trailers. Trailers with these axles are occasionally seen on highways swaying from the right lane to the left lane; they also make the tow vehicle sway and zig - zag up and down the highway like a rattle snake, with the driver fighting the wheel the whole time!

The reason for this is because the straight axle is set up too close to the center of the trailer, which then lightens up the tongue weight. Once weight is taken off the tongue it generates a right and left sway. The straight axle maintains a very high center of gravity and compounds the swaying. Trailers with centered straight axles are very difficult to back up, as they respond too quickly and jack knife frequently. In short, they are dangerous. Often times trailers with straight axles will sway to the point of flipping when pulled on a highway.

Set back drop axles will eliminate all of the above problems and will save you from disaster and disappointment. Aside from this they will enable your trailer to haul a heavier pay load, as the set back axle shares more weight distribution with the towing vehicle. Also your trailer will have a lower center of gravity, will pull perfectly straight, and will be easier to back up. Lastly the set back drop axle will add tremendously to the safety factor and is more likely to fit in your garage. Cheap axles are the third reason why some trailers are less costly than others. The additional cost factor is $50.00.
